The Moss Haus Kitchen Tour
They say the kitchen is the heart of the home and we can definitely say that holds true for our own home. Our kitchen was one of my favorite places to design in our remodel project and I am so excited to share with you all the details.
The Details:
Our refrigerator and open cubbies is rift sawn white oak with a natural stain. The cabinets are inset with a narrow profile shaker, so it lends itself to a more modern look. We chose quartz countertops and backsplash because kids, and it’s so low maintenance. The Et Calacatta Gold quartz is has both cool and warm tones and no grout lines in the backsplash is a major plus. We never cook, so wanted to make sure we got the best looking appliances and Thermador sealed the deal!
The painted hood was intentionally matched to the cabinet color to allow for the wood cubbies to pop and steal the show as a design feature.
We added three sconces over the windows to resemble the dark color seen in the cabinets and to carry the darkness around the full kitchen. With the combination of the painted cabinets and the stained wood cabinets, we added simple clean white oversized pendants to offer a reprieve from the color and exude a minimalist aesthetic. Because of their oversized presence, we were able to do only two pendants versus doing a more traditional three pendant look.
The cabinet color is Raccoon Fur by Benjamin Moore and is accented with brass hardware. The natural stained white oak cabinets are accented with black hardware. Using two hardware colors that compliment the individual cabinet finishes creates a custom look that allows us to leverage contract and continuity throughout the space.
Layout:
Originally it was suggested for the sink placement to be on the center of the island. However, a wise friend and mother of 3, suggested that I keep the mess to the perimeter, so the island can be saved for the mess of serving food and doing homework. I always head the advice of those who have already learned the hard way, and so we placed that sink in the perimeter and popped a window over it. We have loved having a big empty island- it’s great for hosting parties and serving large crowds!
On the island, we added lower cabinets to the front for extra storage. This allows us some extra storage in front of the barstools and is a great use of space.
The open cubbies in the top of the cabinets was a design I tried in a project two years ago. Small upper cabinets would not have been practical for us- I don’t have a ton of extra dishes to store, and I’m not a fan of having to access hard to reach places. I love that the open cubbies add some accents to our home and give us a place to change up seasonally with decorations.
The hidden pantry was originally supposed to be the powder bathroom, but we changed it to a pantry and added a powder bath on the other side of the house. We put a wet bar in there and refrigerator drawers. Depending on the day of the week it functions as a smoothie bar or a hide-and-drink-your-wine room. Overall, it’s super functional for our grab and go lifestyle- which is the phase of life we are in now between school, work, football practice and games, etc.
